As I say, you cannot do this.
In fact, you don't really want to. If you want to keep the merged
cells intact, then it follows that you don't want to insert a new
column - at least, you don't want to do this across the row of merged
cells. Instead, what you presumably want is to insert a new column
only in those rows of the spreadsheet that do *not* have merged
cells. You can do that:
o Select just the cells in a single column between the rows having
merged cells and immediately to the right of where you need the new column.
o Go to Insert | Cells... (or right-click | Insert Cells...).
o In the Insert Cells dialogue box, select "Shift cells right" and OK.
o Now you will presumably need to adjust the merged cells to span
the new range of data columns.
