The issue arose like this:

1. Loaded a previously save Excel .csv in Calc.
So it was already set for the CSV file type and you only receive an error if you change the file type. Never occurred to me. My guess is that if I read a txt file and then I add formatting, the same will be true. Come to think of it, if you added formatting and/or graphics but the internal type is already set to CSV, then it is likely the same problem. Notice that saving will also change formatting, so you should ALWAYS be warned that every save will lose formatting perhaps.
2. Created a second sheet.
3. Clicked the save icon - did not go to the 'File' menu.
4. There was not any warning that it would only save the active sheet.

All the time I was doing saves, the new sheet was active and it was the sheet lost.
Makes sense now.
No, I do not know if a complaint was logged. Would not know where to look.
OK, good to hear. I do know where to look, and I did not find one.

I doubt if this link will come through, but if it does, it will show the three open issues with CSV.

Did you try to install the conversion pack and it failed?
I do not know about a conversion pack. What is it and where is it?

Now, I am off to watch a rented movie with my wife!

Andrew,

I am not going down through the message and try to reply to each entity as you did, but here is my response. I have been communicating with Anthony Chilco and he has agreed that this is a problem. I assume they are going to make repairs.
Do you know off hand if they opened an issue for this? I am pretty good at finding things in their system and I did not find it. I want to make certain that I understand exactly what happened, but I need to verify before I open an issue, since I can not find one.

1. You opened a CSV file containing multiple sheets.

2. You edited the data.

3. You saved the CSV file and it only saved one of the sheets.

Come to think of it, this does not make sense. A CSV file can NOT contain multiple sheets, it can ONLY contain one. OK, this is starting to jog my memory. I remember a macro that would save all sheets to sequential CSV files. OK, new guess:

A. You created a new Calc document

B. You exported the sheet to a CSV file and it only exported one sheet.

I am trying this now. I used Save As to save as a CSV file and I am given the following warning:

This document may contain formatting or content that cannot be saved in the Text CSV file format. Do you want to save the document in this format anyway?

- Click 'Yes' to save in Text CSV file format.
- Click 'No' to use the latest OpenDocument file format and be sure all formatting and content is saved correctly.

I said 'Yes', save it anyway, which it did. When it was finished, it said the following:

Warning saving the document Untitled2:
Only the active sheet was saved.

I was warned two times in two different ways. What version of OOo are you using? I assume Windows. I am using Linux, so things might be a bit different, but this sort of thing usually does not change.

As far as MS goes, I have Office 2000 that I have been using for years now and it has served me well and not burnt me.
Clearly, it is a decent program. I have not found anyone that likes the latest version, but most people that I know using Word do not use the latest version.
I have lost several hard drives, that is why I keep my files backed up on CD.
This was long before that, but I should have saved on floppy. After that, I did. Now, I use a program that keeps versioned backups on an external hard drive. I am attempting to find the time to write a GUI version that will work on both Linux and Windows. This is easier on Linux since Linux handles hard links. Although NTFS has handled hard-links for years, Windows Explorer still has not been modified to properly delete them and it runs havoc with your hard drive (damn you MS, fix it, it has been YEARS). Side note: JPSoft's command line replacement for CMD seems to do it correctly; go figure!
It is a lot different when a program does not complain that you are about to loose data and lets you continue to work and work for nothing.
Can you verify EXACTCLY what you did, because when I tried this, I was warned twice.
The one thing that OpenOffice could do is upgrade its format to match Office 2007 while they are fixing this problem and they would probably become well known in short order.
If I remember correctly, the latest file format from MS is exceedingly complicated and it is not likely to be supported until, um, drat, I can not remember (and I have been told twice) next spring, this fall, next fall, hmmm, one of those.
I personally tried to install their Format Conversion Pack and it failed. Got MS to reply, but they referred me to support for $50/issue.
<grumble grumble> Been there.
I don't think I will be the only one with this problem; and at present, I don't intend to spend over $500 for the entire Office 2007 package which includes Access.
If you still have Office 2000, I would expect that to suffice unless you have Vista, in which case, you may have to upgrade.
