the only reference in help that I could find refereed to starting

Is there any easy way to do this?
I have just downloaded openoffice and am running it on a Mac OS X.4
with X11

A few other questions please

Is there anyway to change the default number of worksheets that are
loaded with a new spreadsheet?

I would like to link openoffice to my mac Address-book but do not
know what sort of database it is so cannot complete the wizard questions

When I use help ( which I need to do all the time at the moment) it
tends to stick and the only way I can proceed is to exit openoffice
by Force quit Also the whole programme seems rather slow - is this
something to do with a mac? There is still plenty of spare space on
the disc.

I too would like to-get rid of the panel which appears when X11
starts but the procedure suggested in an earlier message did not work
for me. the message that appears is - the name of my computer then "fin$

Sorry for so many questions and I really appreciate you lovely people
who take so much time to respond to these questions.

thank you

Hello Frances

There is no QuickStarter for the Mac version of OpenOffice.org.
I suppose things will speed up when the Aqua version of OOo will be
ready, somewhere later this year. The fact that OOo first has to get
X11 running slows down the starting process. If you keep open X11
(e.g. because you use other programs such as The Gimp that need X11),
OOo will be a bit quicker to start.
On my Powerbook, OOo is rather slow, because I have a memory problem
(card with half of the DRAM is broken, and too expensive to
replace...). What model of Mac do you have, and how much memory? If
possible, you might consider increasing the memory bridges. 500 MB
should do.

I don't mind too much that the X11 first opens its own window (I just
click on the red button to close the window, once OOo is running). But
you can instruct X11 not to open its window:
from the Mac Installing How-To:

<quote>
In the starting Xterm (the X11 window), type the following command line :
sudo nano /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
go to the line that contains " xterm & ", and add a " # " at the
beginning. Which gives :
before :
xterm &
after :
# xterm &
after the change :
CTRL-O to validate the change, folowed by CTRL-X to quit the Nano editor -> effect : on the next launch of OpenOffice.org, the Xterm won't show up again.
</quote>

I suppose that it must be possible somehow to increase the number of
sheets a workbook opens with (default = 3), but I don't know where or
how.
You can add new worksheets in 3 ways (from the Introducing Calc
Chapter of the Users Guide)
<quote>
• Click on the Insert menu and select Sheet, or
• Right-click on its tab and select Insert Sheet, or
• Click into an empty space at the end of the line of sheet tabs
</quote>

I have no problem with the Help window (only when I make it partially
disappear from the screen, it tends to be incomplete when it comes up
again on the screen...)
I can just close the window as any other without further ado.

I doubt that -for the moment- you can link OOo with Mac's AddressBook.
Maybe this will be possible in the upcoming Aqua version.

I have 1.67 Ghz processor - on G4 powerbook not intel with 1GB of memory of which just over 40% is free I do not really understand these things but thought that this would be enough. As far as I know `i do not have any problem with memory

Another reply solved the spreadsheet problem ( by changing the default template - rather neat!)

re the Xterm box all I have is the following

I typed what you suggested and got the following
