Even simpler is to configure date as YYYYMMDD, so you just
enter 20070707, or 19950505.

I'll grant that approach fails for years prior to 1000 CE,
or after 9999 CE. (These dates are typical points of failure
for spreadsheets.)

If you are working with either of those time ranges, it
would be simpler to create your date calculation routines,
so that calender conversions, and length of day changes are
correctly calculated.
