not to send you back though that mess of pages again, but ....

There are really two links on the line for the download (English (OpenOffice.org 2.2.1) BitTorent -US) -- the section on the left is a download for the installer, the section on the right is for the bit torrent file, that will require a bit torrent client -- IF it really took you 21 mins to download the torrent file (which is 48k) you really need to get the software on a cd becuse it will take you days to download the entire application.

My guess is that you have downloaded the real thing and that you computer dosn't know what to do with the file -- could you let me know what error message you get when you try to open the file?

You might want to check out neooffice.org -- this is a much more "mac like" version of Open Office and does not require X widows to run. You might find the download and install a little eaiser.

Thanks

Andy

Frank,

I asked, "Please, ... direct me to the 'one click download' page...".
You cordially offered, "http://download.openoffice.org/2.2.1/
index.html".

1) I went there. (I have been here before, FYI.)

That's where you go.

2) On that page I clicked on Download OpenOffice.org (The website?!!!
Why would I want to download the website?)

That's the name of the software. It's called OpenOffice.org

3) It took me to another page.
4) On that page I clicked on the MacOSX link.
5) It took me to another page.
6) On that page I clicked on OpenOffice.org using X11 Windowing
environment (But I don't want Windows!!)

X11 has nothing to do with Microsoft Windows. It is a display protocol for Unix and Unix-like operating systems that pre-dates MS Windows by many years.

7) It took me to another page.
8) On that page I clicked to Mac OS X 10.4x (tiger)
9) It took me to another page.
10) On that page I clicked PowerPC Mac
11) It took me to another page
12) On that page I clicked English (OpenOffice.org 2.2.1) BitTorent -US
13) It downloaded something called OOo_2.2.1_MacOSXPPC_install_en-
US.dmg.torrent

The torrent file will require that you have a Bittorrent file installed. The torrent is just a pointer to the actual file that you need. If the only file that you have is the torrent file, you haven't got the file that is the actual
OpenOffice.org program.

14) 21 minutes later if finished
15) I can't open it. : (

Not a big surprise if you don't have a Bittorrent client and downloaded only
the torrent file.

Ok I have just gone through the web page and found you the exact direct link to the file that you need to download. (This took me all of about 30 seconds to do; I really don't see how it's difficult to find -- this is the first time I've tried to find Mac-anything software anywhere, including
OpenOffice.org.)

Here:

http://openoffice.bouncer.osuosl.org/? product=OpenOffice.org&os=macosxppc&lang=en-US&version=2.2.1

I assume that you want the English-language version. You get a binary file
that's in a .dmg format which, according to this:
http://filext.com/file-extension/DMG is a Macintosh disk image file.

Note that you will require X11 to run this, instructions here:

http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/faq/installing/X11.html

I guess you all just want me to shell out the money for MS Office.

How you spend your money and the software that you choose to run on your
computer is irrelevant to me.

Why would the web designer make this process soooooo difficult?

Again, I found what you need in about 30 seconds, and had no difficulty doing so. You must read the web page carefully and if you don't understand the terminology used (for example: X11 and in my case the .dmg file extension) then run the words that you don't understand through Google or something and learn what they mean before assuming that they are a mere irrelevant detail. I used Google just now to find out what a .dmg file is. When dealing with computers, one word can make a very important difference, and if you don't understand what you're reading it can make it impossible to accomplish the goal that you have
in mind.

I don't see how I can make this much simpler, but if you have further questions I will try to assist you. Note that I don't have a Mac -- in fact, the last Mac that I had anything to do with was one of the original black- and-white Macintosh machines around 1985, and even then my exposure lasted for less than 3 hours total. I assume they have advanced somewhat since then, so I can't offer too much by way of specific direction with regard to Macintosh issues.
