I am Using OO1.1.5 and need to insert eps figures.

This query may be based on a lack of information on my part. If this is
the case, I apologize in advance. I use Linux (and Solaris) in a
university environment, in circumstances under which students write
formal laboratory reports. We have several programs which are used to
produce graphical renditions of data in postscript (.ps) and/or
encapsulated postscript (.eps). Unfortunately, I know of no way to
directly import such figures into text in OpenOffice Writer, as I can
easily do in Wordperfect, or more usually into Framemaker (or even
IslandWrite). It also seems to be the case that this format can't be
imported into Microsoft Word (MSW).

One alternative seems to be to convert the figures into another format,
particularly extended windows metafile (.emf). Unfortunately, the one
conversion program we found fails to conserve resolution and detail.
Other format conversions seem to have the same problem. I note that the
OpenOffice Draw (and Impress) can't import or export eps files either.
Since nearly all of the scientific journals accept (and appear to
prefer) eps files, this is a major obstacle to the use of OO for
scientific manuscripts. In fact, I am “stuck” in Solaris as a result of
these format issues. A version of Framemaker is available for Solaris,
but not for Linux. Suggestions that I use LaTeX are of no interest to
me, that would be like using a hammer and chisel on stone. Journals
published by the American Physical Society will accept manuscripts
produced by MSW, with separate figure files. They also can process such
text-only manuscripts (MS) written in OO(writer). I write MS in
Framemaker (with embedded figures) and as a final submission step
convert to MSW format using OO with figures removed.

Is there any optimism that the OO suite will be expanded to process eps
format figures? This would facilitate substantially broadened use by
both students and faculty. Another feature that would be quite useful
would be the ability to import/export LaTeX documents, bridging the
useage gap between those who continue to use obsoleted document
preparation programs and current technology. I note that there is an on-
going effort to produce a filter for pdf import.

thanks, H. A. Blackstead
