I do use Outlook Express. Before I downloaded the new version of OpenOffice when I opened an email which had an attachment OpenOffice would open the attachment automatically. How do I set OpenOffice to do that again. I remember when I was downloading the new version there was a dialogue box that came up to check off when OpenOffice would open. I believe I didn't check the right box there. Is there anyway to have OpenOffice be the default to open the attachments on Outlool Express when needed. I think I've asked a better question this time. I'm not sure what you mean by "automatically open e-mails". E-mail messages are opened by an e-mail program such as Outlook, Outlook Express or any of many others such as Thunderbird.

OpenOffice is not designed to handle e-mails any more that MS Office is. Some versions of MS Office include an e-mail program ("Outlook") in the distribution but it's a separate program. OpenOffice does not include such a program. Many people who use OpenOffice on Windows delete Microsoft Office but continue to use Microsoft's Outlook or Outlook Express for their e-mail.

When you install OpenOffice, you can happily uninstall Microsoft Office and make OpenOffice the "default" for opening Word, Excel and Powerpoint documents. None of OpenOffice's installation options let you make it the "default" handler for e-mails.

If you do uninstall Microsoft Office I don't believe that will usually uninstall Outlook or Outlook Express as well. If that's what happened to you then you have a few choices: - install Microsoft's Outlook Express which comes free with Windows; it should be on your system somewhere - install Microsoft's Outlook which comes, not free, with some versions of Microsoft Office - install a free non-Microsoft e-mail program. Thunderbird is very popular. You can find it at http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/thunderbird/

Note that if you use a Microsoft e-mail program it will *not* be able to spell check your messages if Microsoft Office is not installed. You can get (free or not free) spell checkers for Outlook Express that don't rely on Microsoft Office. Thunderbird comes with its own spell checker.
