I had a better one

I had to install a copy of MS Office 2003 on a new laptop, since
he wanted to "read" the PowerPoints he gets from a service.
He did not want the free reader or a FREE copy of OpenOffice.org
that could read/write those presentations.

He did not want to pay the price to get the full version from the trialware
MS Office (of course the newest version sucks) so he was able to get a
Office 2003 student version from a university.

He also had me load OOo onto his laptop. WHY did he need Office 2003
if he wanted to have OOo on his computer as well.

Brain washed - rinsed - and whatever.

Why are always people asking that (about free Word, free Powerpoint or free
Excel)? Are most people so used to using pirateware that they think that
they can download expensive software for free from the Internet and that
there is actually some kind of organization behind it?

Actually I told a co-worker about Open Office the other day, and he
immediately, after I tried to explain what it's all about, thought I was
talking about some kind of a crack of MS Office. The stupid man just didn't
understand that there actually can exist more than one office suite in the
world! It didn't even help that I mentioned Sun and Star Office, he still
thought that I was talking about some way to get MS Office illegally for
free. I guess he still doesn't get it. But it's OK for me. If he want to
pay for it, maybe it's his problem rather than mine. The funny thing is that
I don't think he is the kind of guy who even needs OpenOffice. AbiWord and
GNumeric would probably be more than enough for him (if there is a GNumeric
version for Windows, I don't know, but I know that AbiWord for Windows
exists). Still, he would probably pay for MS Office, I guess. Well, I guess the best thing is just to let him think that he made the best choice, where
to spend his money...

But why are people so afraid of open source software? "...every other
function will disappear..." like it was some kind of virus? And even, why
are people so afraid of viruses? Just don't open them... I have no anti
virus program installed since a month now, and my firewall lets everything
thru, but last time I checked there was no virus and nothing else that could
harm my system (Ubuntu 7.04) as far as I could see, and everything just
works (except those things that doesn't have any proper drivers yet). Just
checked my "firewall" and it said:

Events Total Serious threats
Incomming 0 0
Outgoing 0 0

But I don't know. maybe the firewall just doesn't work... ;P
I remember using Windows XP. There were several attacks every minute...

Please note that I am NOT complaining at the OP of this thread or anything, I just wonder why people are so afraid. Who frightened them? And how can we
make people understand what it's all about?

No worries at all. If you have a look at this page, it explains the
component of OOo in as much details you probably require at this stage:
