Installation is very easy. Going through an installation guide for OOo
and updating it, I found that only the MS Windows users suffer when

For various reasons, I (and another author) recommend against distribution specific versions of OOo. In other words, it is a mixed blessing.

* I found multiple bugs related to the 64-bit version on FC-6. The bugs were only in the 64-bit version.

* I had trouble finding a version of Java that worked with OOo on 64-bit FC-6.

Based on this, I went back to the official OOo releases. Another author indicated instability issues on Ubuntu. Now, I move ahead in time to Fedora-7. Certainly, the distribution specific versions have improved, but...

As expected, distribution specific versions run behind official releases. This is especially problematic on Debian systems (I am told). So, if you want the latest, you must stay with the official (as opposed to distribution specific versions). Unfortunately, it was no trivial or without peril to remove the distribution specific version because every time I ran update, it tried to update the distribution specific version. it is not that it can not be done, but you must jump through the correct hoops to do it.

In case you are wondering, the advantages to the distribution specific versions are mentioned. For example, easy to install, correct language and locale, Novell extensions...

The real under-dog at the moment is the Mac version, which appears to have three flavors. Luckily, that is coming along well.
OS X (Intel or PPC):
  download the package
drag the icon to the applications folder

Linux GUI:
run Adept and then click on OpenOffice+any language support

Linux command line:
  apt-get install openoffice.org openoffice.org-l10n-ru
