I don't recommend using the JRE that is included with OOo Linux - when
you file a bug against it, the response is "not our problem". Instead I
use 1.6.0_2 JRE from Sun without any problems.

Given that you are doing Java development, I'm pretty sure that you
installed JRE/JDK properly. But for others who want a simple link to

As for your problem: I don't know what it might be, however you might
try renaming your OOo profile (.openoffice.org2) to something else, open
OOo again & let it build a new profile, and see if perhaps it it
something in your profile that is causing the problem. If that is not
it, perhaps a reinstall might be in order.
  You can also install the 2.3dev version (it will run side-by-side
w/2.2.1) and see if you experience problems in that as well. On the
download link, click the "start downloading a release candidate" in the
blue "help us testing" box.
