I googled for "open source screen video capture" and it seemed to
come up with some good results.
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/camstudio/> can also export to SWF
Hope this helps

So then the question is what software do I use to record it to my
hard drive? I want to turn the slides into web videos. So I need it
in some kind of video format that I can then convert to the web
format I need. In other works I don't need the capture tool to make
the video web ready. I can do that my self. I just need it in a
video format.

Is there way to make Impress slide shows into videos?
You mean a video as in a video recording? Sure! You can record
the output to a
video recorder using any of several tv-out cards on your
computer. Some come
built-in to certain video cards, some are separate add-in cards.
You can also record directly to a file on your computer using any
of several
"video capture" programs.
The short answer to your question is yes, you can indeed do what
you are
asking. The longer answer is that exactly how you go about this
depends on
what you wish to accomplish.
