Suggestion: Set your old machine to autologon, set to allow remote connect and then just VNC into the machine. That's what I do for several of my test systems. You don't even need to attach a keyboard or mouse on the target machine. Hint: if you are using a gnome desktop, don't bother using Gnome-RDP as the VNC client, use krdc instsead: sudo apt-get install krdc. With krdc you get working scroll bars *and* the full screen feature actually works.
