Bingo Brian, thank you.
I was (am) used to MSWord and currently re-writing a basic word processing guide for seniors (SeniorNet - and being senior myself) using OpenOffice.org and using the Writer to do it, learning about it as I go.

May I ask another question:
I am using two computers and have installed OpenOffice.org 2.21 on both.
I want to use dummy text for some exercises and can get it on one computer by typing dt and pressing F3 but not on the other. Both keyboards are Microsoft but not identical. I could get around it by using a batch file to get it on the student's screen but only if there is no other fullproof method. Any ideas?
Gus

I noticed that when using the format painter to copy a character format it also picks up the paragraph format. Is there a way to prevent that?

You would expect this to happen - wouldn't you? - if you use the Format Paintbrush to copy formatting from one part of a document to another. When you copy the formatting of a piece of text, all aspects of formatting are included.

But this doesn't happen if you copy just the character format. To do this, create a character style with the appropriate qualities (or use an existing one) and then use Fill Format Mode from the Styles and Formatting window. Use Format | Styles and Formatting, or F11, or the button at the left of the Formatting toolbar to open the Styles and Formatting window, select the Character Styles button, select the required character style, and then select the Fill Format Mode button. This appears to paint just the character style.

I trust this helps.
