That happened to me onceI checked the options for substituting OpenOffice.org for the 3 MS Office file formats.
So you'll have changed the associations.
Just uninstall the OpenOffice.org and restart the computer
That won't help at all. You'll just have a set of associations to a now non-existent application.
double-click the DOC file to make sure it works with Word again
But it won't. You haven't changed anything. Installing OpenOffice (in the way that you did it) changed the associations, but removing OpenOffice achieved nothing.
Then - reinstall OpenOffice.org without clicking on the options to allow automatic opening of the MS documents.
Now you'll have OpenOffice again, but you still haven't reset the relevant associations to Microsoft Office. You'll need to do that manually - using right-click | Open With > | Choose Program... and the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box. The remove / reinstall was a red herring.
I use OpenOffice.org 2.2.x as my default package, BUT I also have MS Office 2003 installed for the 5% of the files that do not work well with Writer, Calc, etc.
Perfectly sensible. And even people who do not have Microsoft Office installed may prefer (if they are using Windows) to install the free Microsoft viewers for Office document files, and to have the appropriate file types associated with these viewers instead of with OpenOffice.
