You get it backwards. Mac OS/X is Unix-based (BSD userland +
match/BSD mixed kernel with a somewhat NextStep gui if you
wonder). The old Mac OS was not unix-nothing.
According to several websites that have information on the history
of Unix the Mac has always been a Unix like OS. The Mac shows up on
the Unix chronological list in 1985 with the very first version.
Google Unix and you will find a lot of sites. One of the them is
the BellLabs (AT&T) site.
I don't know where that info came from but the first Mac, released in
1984 on the 68K series CPU, did not run anything resembling Unix. In
the mid '90s, the Mac switched to the PowerPC CPU and was working on a
joint project with IBM called "Talingent" (IIRC), which was supposed to
merge Mac and OS/2 software. The Unix core came with OS X, in the late
90's.
