This is not the usual behaviour of OpenOffice, so you must be doing something wrong.

The obvious possibility is that you are trying to print to file. On the first panel you see when you print a document, you should see a "Print to file" box. Make sure that this is *not* ticked. If this is ticked, OpenOffice - like any application - will save the print image (not the document itself) as a file, and it is this that makes it bring up the Save As... dialogue. This can be useful if you need to print a document at a system which does not have the application itself, but that is not what you want here.

Another possibility is that you have selected a virtual printer. Sometimes utilities designed to save material in particular formats can exhibit themselves as if they were printers, but then enable you to save the output as a file. This will not be a problem as long as you select the correct printer.
