In my version of Excel F9 doesn't do that. If you could provide more details
around what happens when you do this in your version it would be most
helpful.

My guess is that it is tied to a random number generator and the F9 key causes a recalculation. so, it would be a simple matter to find the random formula in Calc...

=RANDBETWEEN (1;6)

Place this formula in as many cells as you want to have for the dice roll and then use Ctrl+Shift+F9 to recalculate.

Just a guess!
