Yes, you missed one step. You need to save the file in Microsoft Word
format for them to read it.
When creating and sending a file to a person with MS Word, use
File > Send > Email as Microsoft Word. This will open your email client
with your file attached to the new message as an attachment. Enter the
receiver's email address, a subject, and any additional message. Then send
as usual.
