Just as a background. There is an industry standard document format
used by OpenOffice.org and others called Open Document Format that is
currently an official international (ISO) standard. Microsoft has
refused to adopt this in Microsoft Office and instead came up with
their OOXML format. I'm not going to go into details on why OOXML is
not good, but recently Microsoft has been trying to get their OOXML
approved as an International Standard. In MS Word, .docx files are
OOXML.  

Note that Groklaw is a web site that tends to focus on legal issues
around OpenSource.
