Did you use FILE -> SAVE AS -> and choose from the "save as type:" drop
down list Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP Template (.xlt)?
Also, the checkbox should be checked for "Automatic file name extension."

Yes - and no. It is mostly compatible, but macros may not work
since OpenOffice uses StarBasic not Visual Basic. You can read
and save-as Excel, except for the latest M$oft DOCX formats and
the OpenOffice community is working on filters for these.
