It depends upon which version of Microsoft Word you are talking about
and the file format used in the document. OpenOffice.org (OOo) will open
documents as long as they are .doc files. It will not open the .docx files
yet. OOo has its own native format which is also an ISO standard. MS Word
can not read this format without a plugin. OOo can also save documents in
the .doc format that MS Word can read.
