When I realized that there was an update for OpenOffice 2.1, I went for
it, but found I was beginning to download the entirety of 2.2.1. This
is not the end of the world, but as I am working with dial-up, it is a
major chore.
I am a novice, so it would not surprise me to be told I was missing an
obvious button; nor would I be surprised to be told that the changes
between 2.1 and 2.2.1 are more than a mere patch, and that it is
necessary to start over.
If it is necessary to start over, is it simplest to erase my first
OpenOffice first, or can the new group of files simply overlay the
originals? I am particularly wondering how to avoid needing to download
dictionaries again and again—a hypothetical question at this point, I
have none on board.
As I said, I am a novice, so any help will be welcome, but if I would
more usefully be on another site, tell me.

Hi Brant
Unfortunately there is no way to update OOo except by replacing the
whole suite. I think the debugging required for incremental patches on
the different platforms makes this the most reliable for the
developer/QA resources available.
You might like to wait a few days, as 2.3 is due for release very soon.
I hope you use a download manager if you are on dial-up.
The release notes for the new version should indicate whether it will
install to a different directory structure or over the top of your old
installation. I any case removal of the old system first is rarely
needed. Even if it installs "parallel" it can usually find and utilise
the settings you have. One exception is if you have manually installed
extra dictionaries - including custom word lists. It is a good idea to
make a backup of those, as they tend to be overwritten.
