The OOo (OpenOffice.org) spell check function has to accommodate many
languages and requires a little configuration to ensure it works
correctly for your language/dialect.

Use the "File -> Wizards -> Install New Dictionaries" menu option, or
see: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries

For a tutorial on spell checking and language configuration see:

While saving your files in MS closed propriety format is irrelevant to
the OOo spell check function, I would recommend that you save in the OOo
default OpenDocument ISO/IEC 26300:2006 standard file format. If a file
should become corrupt, you have a greater chance of recovering data from
the OpenDocument file format, than you do with the closed MS format. If
at any time you need to have any of those files in another format, it is
a simple task to open them and save/export/email as required.

Hope this helps.
