In the future if you check with me before your next purchase, I have
low prices on OpenOffice.org and other software.

The proper format for someone to get the files in is PDF, txt, RTF
or tell the other people to install the the sun Open Document
Format (ODF) plugin found here:

http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin/get.jsp

Then they will be able to open, read, write & save to the ODF.

Also point out to them that Microsoft file formats are not ISO
approved formats. Public sources (government) of information are
using ISO approved formats and not proprietary formats produced by
just one company.
