You can see the all the headers after you download the message.
Thunderbird can only filter on the four headers shown before you
download the message. There have been regular complaints on
Thunderbird newsgroups about this and requesting changes in the
filtering. I don't know how other newreaders work.
Sorry, but this really has me confused. How do you see the subjects
without downloading the messages? How do you know which messages to
reply to?
And if you do decide to reply to a particular message then TB has to
download that message and it can set the tag. The tag shows up when
you open the message so you don't need to look at the headers yourself.
When I open a message in TB it has 5 or 6 header lines. The first 5,
which are always present, are Subject, From, Reply-To, Date and To.
The 6th is only present if the message has been tagged and is the
setting of the tag (Important, Work, Personal, To-do, and Later). Each
setting is shown in a different colour.

* I am talking about using Thunderbird as a Newsreader, not as
email. I read the posts to this list from Gmane using Thunderbird.
When I check for new postings, I get a list showing Subject, From,
and Date. Thunderbird can only filter using these three headers in
newsgroups. After I download the message body, I can view the rest
of the headers, but can not filter on these headers. This
behaviour is different from when you use Thunderbird for emails.
