OOo (OpenOffice.org) does include a database program "Base", see
http://www.openoffice.org/product/base.html for a general overview.
Additionally, OOo can access external data sources (eg. spreadsheets,
SQL databases, etc.). For a simple database "Base" should fit the bill,
for more advanced or complex functionality there are a number of high
end database engines (eg. PostgreSQL, MySQL, etc.) available under
Linux, which can be accessed from within OOo.
With regard to Linux, you should be aware that many distros include a
modified version of OOo as part of their package. In some cases these
modified versions have added or slightly different functionality from
the "official" edition available from the OOo website. I would recommend
that, while you are gaining experience with OOo's features, you install
the "official" edition in preference to the distro edition. You can
always swap over to an alternative edition at a later date.
