is there anyway i can import/read .wks into openoffice or do i need a
converter--which one? have tons of old files saved in .wps.

There's a rumour that OpenOffice on Linux can do this but I don't know
if it's true.

Under File - Open menu on the Linux version of OO 2.3, I see these entries:

WPS 2000/Office 1.0 (*.wps)
Lotus 1-2-3 (*.wk1; *.wks; *.123)

Lotus's .wks and Microsoft's .wks are completely different animals. OO can
open the former but not the latter.
