Could cron run OpenOffice.org with "-headless"
  soffice -headless -accept="socket,port=8100;urp;" ?
(I don't know if -headless works with OOo1.x)

Nuther possibility - there seems to be a package "openoffice.org-headless" at 
least for Ubuntu and it looks like maybe for Debian
