You can have both MS Office and OpenOffice on the same computer, without any problems, as I do on my work computer. However, during the install, you'll be asked if you want to make OpenOffice the default application for MS Office files. This is up to your personal choice and can easily be changed later. Since you'll have both on your computer, you might also want to install the Sun ODF plugin, which will enable Word and Excel support for the ODF file formats.
