If I understand your goal, you wish to take the data in the MS Access file and import it into Base?

If so, the easiest way is to use Access to export the data into a CSV file. Then open the CSV file with Calc. This will give you the option of defining the data types for each field.

With the Calc file open, open your Base file so that both windows overlap each other, preferably with the Base window staggered to the left of Calc window.

Switch back the the Calc window, highlight the data, including the header row. In the last cell highlighted, left click and hold and drag the selection to the Table Icon in the Base window. This will open the import wizard to create your table using the data from the Calc window.

If you already have the table defined, and wish to add the Calc records to the existing table, select the 'Append' box in the import wizard.

Click on 'Create' and your records will be imported.

If I have misunderstood, my apologies.

I am trying to convert a large 2mb, 2600 record MS Access file to OpenOffice, and am unable to find any simple way to do it. I've not yet had a problem with Writer or Calc, just Base. I cannot edit the file. What I have read indicates something about MySQL DB - whatever that is - but does not say how I can open AND EDIT an access file. Can I import the data and then edit it in Base? My feeling, and fear, is that this is not going to be an easy program to use.

I've read the FAQ "cannot edit a newly created table." It made no sense to me, as I am opening a file, not creating a file.
Is Base of of those programs where you have to be a programmer to use?
I am using XP, sp2. Dan
