> I have 3 issues I have encountered when using your program.

The issues you have encountered are the result of your inexperience with
computers and a lack of understanding about the OOo (OpenOffice.org)
project.

> I am of the understanding, Open Office will perform in place of any Microsoft
> programs,

For the most part that is true. However, OOo is NOT a "knock-off" clone
of MS Office.

No "we" do not respond to demands, we try to provide assistance in reply
to polite requests from our fellow users. This is a volunteer user
mailing list, not a paid company support operation.

> the attachment. Why?

Because Works files are saved in a closed propriety Microsoft format and
only MS software can open or save them. I would suggest you ask the
sender to use the Works "Save As.." option to save and resend the file
in RTF or Word format, which OOo can open.

> 2. My wife received a spreadsheet in Excel. Your program would only open
> 2/3 of the sheet. Why? The Excel was sent in portrait direction.

It is unclear what you mean by "2/3 of the sheet". There could be any
number of reasons why some part(s) are not visible (eg. hidden columns),
but it is impossible to determine a reason based on your description of
the situation.

> 3. I have typed some documents in your word processor and the e-mail
> recipients cannot open them with their Word programs. Why?

By default OOo saves new documents in ODF (OpenDocument ISO/IEC
26300:2006 standard) file format. Microsoft refuses to include opening
and saving of this ISO standard file format as an inbuilt option in
their software offerings.

Some suggestions:

If the recipient only needs to read your document and does not need to
edit/change it. Send it as a PDF (Portable Document Format) file, using
the OOo "File -> Export As Pdf..." menu option. Almost every computer
has the free Adobe Reader or equivalent pdf viewer program installed.

If the recipient needs to edit/change your document, the options are:

1. Suggest that the recipient installs OOo. It is free and will coexist
with Microsoft software.

2. Suggest that the recipient installs the free Sun ODF MS Office
add-in, available from: http://www.sun.com/software/star/odf_plugin
The current version of this add-in enables users of MS Office greater
than version 98, to open, edit and save files in ODF format from Word,
Excel and Powerpoint.

3. Use the OOo "File -> Save As..." or "File -> Send..." menu options
and save/send your file in a format that MS Office is capable of reading
(eg. plain text ".txt", Rich Text Format ".rtf", Word ".doc", etc.)

As stated previously OOo is not an MS Office clone, therefore your
assumption is incorrect. Had you done the minimum of research, you would
have discovered that OOo is an Open Source community project and can be
downloaded for free from http://www.openoffice.org You did not pay your
money to OOo, because "we" do not sell the program "we" give it away for
free. If you feel you have wasted your money, I would suggest that you
take your grievance back to the person/organization who took your
payment, because this has nothing to do with OOo.

I trust the above will be of some assistance to you.
