I've just tried this out in winXP using OOo2.3 and ctrl + backspace deletes
the word preceeding the cursor, but not the space as well. The space after
the word before the one being deleted remains... in my tests...

It could be that this issue (I've not tried it on any previous versions) has
been corrected... If your not using 2.3 maybe try upgrading and experiement.
