I am assuming you are using Windows. If not, ignore this completely and wait
for someone else's response.
Before installing the new version look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 and follow the instructions. You should
then be able cleanly to remove the old 2.0 version. After that installing the
new 2.3 version should be trouble free.
This is really a Windows problem as evidenced by the fact that Microsoft has
produced a solution.
