Fedora 6. Consider me new to linux. After installing FC 6 with OO 2.0 I tried
to update to OO 2.3. After downloading I THOUGHT I followed the instructions
for
Linux RPM-based Installation
Installation Steps

   1. Unpack the downloaded image into a directory. For example, currently, the
following command would unpack into the current directory:
   2. tar xvzf OOo_2.3.0_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz
   3. su to root, if necessary.
   4. cd into the directory with the unpacked image. This could be RPMS.
   5. Delete any rpm files that do not apply to your system. For example, on a
Fedora Core 3 system, delete any rpms specific to another distribution such as
openofficeorg-suse-menus-1.9.79-1.noarch.rpm.
   6. Then execute rpm -Uvih *rpm.

Everything appeared to go fine - no errors. When finished the APPLICATIONS menu no longer had the
OO aps available. When I ran the Package Manager it said that updates where available. I ran it and
the OO aps where again on the APPLICATIONS menu. However, Writer, Calc etc "help - about"
indicate OO 2.0.4. The only packages that indicate OO 2.3 are "CORE" packages.

Any help appreciated.

Hello Ron and welcome to Linux.

I would have installed Fedora 7 as it has been out for a few months.

The version of OOo supplied with Fedora is older and has been modified to work best with Fedora. Not your actions.

When you install OpenOffice from the OOo site, the package manager things this is an older release. You have to tell the package manager not to look at OOo, at least until Fedora gets a copy of 2.3 out. I doubt that will happen for FC6 as 8 will be out in a few months.

To prevent the OpenOffice issue with updates, you will have to edit a couple of your /etc/yum.repo files.

In /etc/yum.repo/fedora-core.repo and in /etc/yum.repo/fedora-updates.repo add the following line.

   exclude=openoffice.org*

[fc-updates]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Updates
baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/updates/$releasever/$basearch/
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=updates-released-fc$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=0
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora
exclude=openoffice.org*

[core]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch
baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/$releasever/$basearch/os/
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=core-$releasever&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY
exclude=openoffice*
