It won't work the exact same way, but if you're willing to learn a
little, OpenOffice can do fine.  Saving a file in Word is the same as
saving a file in Writer.  Both print pretty much the same, etc.  The big
problem a lot of people have is moving from Microsoft-centric
terminology to more general terminology (it's pretty hard to figure out
what's wrong with your Saturn if you keep calling it a Ford ;-))
The big problem is if your friends send you Office 2007 (.docx, .xlsx)
files, but that's largely because of MS not willing to make the document
standard truly open.  If they downgrade their documents to a previous
version of Office (.doc, etc), OpenOffice can open those.
