It won't work the exact same way, but if you're willing to learn a little, OpenOffice can do fine. Saving a file in Word is the same as saving a file in Writer. Both print pretty much the same, etc. The big problem a lot of people have is moving from Microsoft-centric terminology to more general terminology (it's pretty hard to figure out what's wrong with your Saturn if you keep calling it a Ford ;-)) The big problem is if your friends send you Office 2007 (.docx, .xlsx) files, but that's largely because of MS not willing to make the document standard truly open.
