There's nothing wrong with the files. OOo 2.2 (and now 2.0.4 as I've had to
go back to that on the original OpenSUSE 10.2 DVD) open them OK. 

The implementation of 2.3 seems weird. After installing OOo 2.3, clicking on
the files did not start OOo as the file associations had been lost. The
separate menu icons for Calc, Writer, etc., were missing. Presumably these
two problems are related.
