Thanks for the suggestion but did not fix. :o(
Since I installed 2.3:
- cannot print on local network
- cannot run control panel (add/delete programs) - rundll32.exe cannot
find program!
- cannot run control panel (display) - rundll32 can't find - same if
right-click background.
- some programs, like the game heart, responds to left-click by asking
what program should run it. However, if I right-click on it and
choose 'run as' from the menu and click 'OK' without entering anything
it runs fine.
- many other programs are messed up and can't find their components.
My virus checker finds no problem.
I am running vmware under windows to support linux. I'm concerned I
have to wipe out windows and start over. I may just switch to linux
while I'm at it but I sure would like to know how everything got so
messed up. No one else seems to have the problem.

I am running Windows XP pro and replaced OOo 2.1 with OOo 2.3. I
noticed the fontwork problem right off but thought I could live with
it until a fix comes along. However, I'm now experiencing a much
greater problem. When I boot XP I get about a dozen soffice.exe and
soffice.BIN processes showing up in task manager along with
notification that the program cannot run in DOS mode! After I kill
all the processes I find that if I right-click on my screen to bring
up display properties, OOo pops up instead. Same thing in control
panel - I try to launch Add/Delete software but OOo 2.3 pops up
instead with the customary garbage screen of course. I have not
tried manually deleting OOo 2.3 and reinstalling because I feared I
may have a registry problem and might need it. Also, when I
installed OOo 2.3, OOo 2.1 subdirectory became empty so I can't try
using it. I'd appreciate any clues you'all might have to get my
system under control again. I've enjoyed OO for a long time but
never had a problem 'til now.
try disabling the quickstarter, as this seems to be the problem
go to TOOLS => OPTIONS => click on OPENOFFICE.ORG == MEMORY an UNcheck
load the quickstarter
and restart
if it does not work uninstall & re-install but during the installation
choose CUSTOM install when prompted and do NOT install the quickstarter.
I hope this helps !!!

It sounds like you have something corrupted in Windows at this point,
like something in the installation burped and wrote in the wrong spot on
your hard disk. Do you have a boot disk you can start you system with
and maybe figure out what's wrong and maybe run control panel then?
I use WIN2000, not XP, If you can't reboot with the boot disk maybe you
can use explorer to find the control panel program and run it. Can you
get to it that way and run add/remove programs from there?
If you can I would suggest trying to remove OO and then run run Check
disk. (I don't have an XP machine available or I'd give you more
detailed instructions.
