I certainly call it "lack of support!" If I want to put some files on my website in .odt format, but they won't allow visitors to the site to download those files, that is LACK OF SUPPORT. Especially since all they need to do to "support" it is stop inhibiting it.

I think what annoys me most it that they DO SUPPORT (allow) .doc files, a proprietary and non-standard (but widely used) format, and REFUSE TO SUPPORT .odt files, an open, free, and internationally approved standard format.

I say, flood all these places with nastygrams until they get tired of it and support ODF.

I have to ask in all seriousness what are they "supporting"? It's just
allowing a file to be downloaded. That's it. Good thing I use hostgator.

Actually, they aren't the only ones. I have a website with Freeservers,
and they won't support ".odt" files either. What is REALLY annoying,
when you hit this they say "send a message to support this" and then
when I do, they say "no, we aren't going to support that." I was going
to see about escalating it but never got around to it.

I think a lot of the problem is that they want to check for viruses and
such but THEY DON'T KNOW HOW! And they don't want to put forth the
effort to write a virus checker for what THEY THINK is a never-used file
type.

Some of there problems will go away as ODF gains traction ... not sure
if M$N will ever get the word, though (unless a judge tells them :-) )

I am a very new user and I'm having the following problem with using
openoffice.

I have created some very simple text documents using the writer
program. Regardless of the file type I have attempted to save them
as, this is what is happening.

When I attempt to attach these files to an e-mail (MSN is my
provider) I get the following message:

"Access to the following unsafe attachments have been blocked".

To the best of my knowledge I do not have any virus on my computer.

Any ideas?

Barring MSN changing policies, the first thing I'd do is zip up the file
and see if it goes through that way.

If it is the case they're actually blocking ODF files, then perhaps a
complaint or two to the relevant regulators would be in order. I'm sure
that judge in Europe would love to hear about it. ;-)
