The problem is that the plus sign is interpreted as an operator. To
avoid this, you must add the plus symbol to the catalog and then
reference it as a symbol. It took me a while to figure out how to do
this...
I started entering the formula
H^{}
I placed the cursor in the curly brackets
H^{|cursor_is_here|}
Use Tools | Catalog to open the catalog with symbols. I added the symbol
to the Special symbol set, so select the special symbol set rather than
the Greek symbol set.
Click Edit
Near the bottom, there are fields for
Symbol
Symbol set
Font
subset
Typeface
Under Symbol, enter the text plus. This says that you want to create a
new symbol named plus. It probably says "and", which means that you
could change how the and symbol appears.
Leave the Symbol set as Special.
Choose a plus sign from the characters.
The Add button in the lower right corner should now be active. click Add.
Now, select the "+" and click insert.
Your formula is now:
H^{%plus}
The symbol name is %plus. We associated this symbol with "+".
If we simply enter a +, it is treated as an operator. This way, we get
the + and it is not treated as an operator.

Hello, I tried to insert the symbol for protons that would be H^{+} in
equations, but the result is a mess. Who knows how to do it?
