It sounds as if you have inserted a horizontal rule rather than a line.
Click on the pencil icon at the top of the screen to bring up the drawing
toolbar, select line and draw your line. Right click on the line, or go
Format>Object>Line to format the line as you want it.

For this option, if you don't see the pencil in your toolbars, select
view>toolbars and select the drawing toolbar. If you want to change the
format of the line , rightclick on the line for a menu. You can also
change the length of this line.
(Apparently there are at least 3 ways to draw a line, each has different
options for editing and formatting.the line.)
