I have recently discovered that Open Office Writer apparently has
the same bad habit as nano does; it seems to decide on its own to
append carriage returns at the end of lines, even when they are
explicitly not entered. There are some scripts I use which get
completely discombobulated when they see <CR> where they're
not expecting it.

Is there any option-setting that would eliminate this? I've
gone all through the HELP screens and can find nothing.

BTW Midnight Commander's text editor does *not* append unasked-for
carriage returns.

The wider question, which may well be exposing my ignorance,
is why would we *ever* want any editor to add things we didn't
ask for?

Sometimes I *really* miss the Reveal Codes feature of Word Perfect:-)

Not sure what you mean by OO adding carriage returns. It *wraps* lines that are too long for the page but that's what word processors are supposed to do. That's why people use them.

As for Reveal Codes, try View Nonprinting Characters.
