clicking "Reply" does one of two things: either it marks everything
there and puts the cursor on a blank line at the top;
or it marks everything there and puts the cursor on a blank line at the
bottom.
No, wait, I think there is a third option, I think you can set it to
include nothing from the mail you are replying to.
As far as I know, this behavior has been pretty much consistent from the
days of Netscape 4, later Netscapes, the early (pre-Firefox) Mozillas,
and now Seamonkey. Don't know what's under the hood, but I've been using
essentially the same mail client for, what, 10 years? 15? I have no clue
how any of those other mail clients work.
And I will also say, I have trouble seeing what all the fuss is about,
because I ***PERSONALLY*** find Top-posted appends to be MUCH faster and
easier to read! Bottom posting isn't TOO bad if people trim, which they
don't. And, again ***PERSONALLY***, I find those INTERSPERSED replies to
be a REAL GENUINE PITA to read ... hunting down the various new bits,
backing up to see what THIS ONE is answering, finding the next ... YUCK!
I am not trolling here, I REALLY LIKE to open an append and see what's
NEW here, very occasionally I have to scroll down to refresh my memory
about what's going on but not often. And if appends get out of order,
with top-posting, looking back to the 2nd-latest or 3rd latest is
usually enough.
I know some people don't agree with me, that's OK. To them I say "Frank
Sinatra!"

And if that's too complicated, then after hitting 'reply' just push
the
down arrow key until your cursor is below the quoted reply text, or
just
use the mouse to click below :-)
Once again, why not _ s e l e c t i v e l y _ quote _just_ the critical
bits of the previous person's text, and reply specifically to her/his
points, without including all the other stuff that nobody needs to see
again?
Doesn't SeaMonkey give you the option to highlight some text and click
"Reply" or "Reply to List" and have only that selected text sucked into
the new message? If it doesn't, then it's high time.
Yes, I admit that I too occasionally forget to trim. So do other people
who normally edit replies properly. At least we have the grace to be
embarrassed about it and to try not to repeat for a while. That's
important when there are thousands of members and contributors.
It's like having a**holes in vehicles on the streets of a big city. With
a million people driving, there's already plenty of opportunity for bad
things to happen just because the sheer volume ensures that at least
some will be inattentive at any given moment, or get stung by a bee, or
drop their hot coffee in their laps, or have a relationship break up via
cellphone. With a guaranteed statistical minimum number of people
screwing up all around us each day as we commute, we really don't need
people adding to the problem because of malice or contempt. The same
applies to a lesser degree on a mailing list with thousands of
participants - we don't need people who won't at least try to be
courteous
Bring back crucifixion. Flogging, too... flogging's good. :-)
