[users] spell check not working

I am using Open Office version 2.3 on a Mac.  I cannot get the spell check to work.  When I use on old document from off my previous PC - still open office version 2.3, the spell check does work.  However, once I save it and reopen it the spell check ceases to function. I think I have found all the appropriate things to tick, but who knows, I am not overly successful with computer problems.   Help...............
