I'm unsure about your specific forumla but I have been using the {} array formula construct for some time in OOo (I am currently running the 2.2.0 Ubuntu Feisty release).

Make sure you use the CTL+SHIFT+ENTER when you leave the formula cell. You can't type the curly braces in, they must be generated by the app when you leave the cell.

Here's an example of a formula I use with named ranges in other sheets - It adds all cells in range that fit the criteria and present the result. The range grows and contracts as line items are added or removed.

{=SUM((Single_SaleDate>April)*(Single_SaleDate<=May)*(Single_UK="Y")*(Single_Sales))}
