I was under the impression that the quickstarter automatically activated
itself when you first ran OOo.

A dodgy trick to making OOo 'start' quickly is to not close it. When you
finish working with the last document ( text, spreadsheet, whatever ),
instead of clicking the *application* close button, click the *document*
close button ( immediately below and to the left ). This will leave an
OOo window open, and when you go to open another document, it will
appear inside this window.
