I agree that this would be a really useful menu command: in one of my other favorite (not quite free but pays for itself a hundred thousand times) software, Graphic Converter (lemkesoft.de German, lemkesoft.com English ... and Mac-only I'm afraid) is the only title I've got installed that has this choice.

Save A Copy As saves a copy of the name you specify, in the directory you specify, but does not open it and your active window remains the original document.

I'd love to see this additional command in any application I use that has a Save and Save As command. Including in the OOo suite. Are Robert & I alone? If not maybe I'll file an enhancement suggestion, something I've been meaning to learn how to do ...
