OpenOffice, by default saves in the ISO standard ODF format, which Microsoft refuses to support. This means you have to save the files in Word format (actually save, not just rename .ODT to .DOC). Other alternatives are to send them a PDF or have the recipients install OpenOffice or the Sun ODF plugin.
