In Word 97 if I am correct, the spacing between a bulleted number and
its text is determined only by the setting for that line, with a default
used to set it at the time of the bulleted number being inserted. This
can be controlled by the two triangle-ish and one square shaped slider
at the top.
In OOo the setting in concern for me is under Format -> Bullets &
Numbering -> Position -> Spacing to text (and perhaps the Minimum space
numbering <-> text option as well, but I'll ignore that for now). This
can be either manipulated directly for any given line, or part of a style.
New documents in OOo seem to have a sane default value for this setting
(0.64cm), but .doc files that I open have this setting at 0, causing the
issue similar to what's discussed here:
http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/BrowseList?list=users&by=thread&from=664339
That thread is about spacing in the table of contents. So a different
subject.
That is, the numbers are mashed up against the text.
I cannot reproduce.
If I start a new file in Word, use numbering, save and open in OOo, the
spacing is just there.
However, this is with Word 2003. Maybe that makes a difference?
It would seem to me that because Word doesn't have a place to store this
value in styles, OOo has a default value it uses for .doc imports, which
is 0. Is there a way to change this? I certainly don't want our users to
have to manually change every document they open! Even running a macro
on every document at open time[1] feels rather clumsy.
Curiously, once this setting is entered in OOo, it sticks even for .doc
files, so I guess the file format can handle it. Maybe I just haven't
found the place in Word where it's stored.
Sorry, but I don't understand what you say here.
Where do you enter which setting in OOo?
Thanks for bearing with the long email. Hopefully someone can help.
Was a pleasure reading ;-)
Hope my reply is a start of a solution.
Regards,
Cor
