Thank you all very much indeed. I tried to open a document tonight and lo and behold - I got the egg timer. This had happened before but then it went away and nothing opened. Tonight it worked. Slowly, admittedly, but I now find I can access my documents.
If you did something to my setup thank you very, very much. I can now get on with my work and earn some more money. If you did not do anything, then I must have done what was needed by uninstalling 2.3 (which stopped everything working) and reinstalling 2.2 which had been working beautifully ever since I downloaded it.
