You can get the latest version of OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org. 
As for file formats, all versions behave the same way.  If you're
sending a file to someone using Microsoft Office, you can use "Save as"
to save in Word format.  You can even select to email in that format. 
If you only create Word documents, it is possible to set that as the
default for saving.
